Hey all, hope this is the right place to put this!
A friend of mine really wants a tarot deck for Christmas. I've found a couple I think she'd adore but what with the exchange rate and costs of shipping to NZ they're all just a little bit out of my price range. Is there any chance people could recommend some similar decks in style and theme that are even $10 cheaper?
She's a bit of a proto-goth - likes the macabre but not anything too gory. Bones are a hard yes, viscera is a hard no. The other thing is she doesn't want a man on the lovers card. Two women, fine. Animals, fine. Inanimate objects, fine. Just no dudes.
And the Animal Os Fortuna which I think is perfect if only it was a tiny bit cheaper.
Like, plan B is going around our mutual friends and asking if anyone wants to go in with me for one of the above (probably the Os Fortuna bc I think it matches her aesthetic perfectly) but is there anything a little bit similar that anyone knows that, as I said, might be just a few dollars down? About the $25 USD or maybe even $30 mark?
Cheers all and thanks for any help you can provide!
1. It makes for a handsome gift set 2. It's affordable and readily available in international markets 3. Has no people 4. Is extremely popular, so research is widely available 5. Fits a wide range of personal tastes.
The wooden tarot is considered EXTREMELY difficult to read with, even by advanced readers Animalis Os Fortuna is a beautiful set, but for the $$ WUK is a better deal.
Hope this helps

Nooo, don't go with Wild Unknown, it's such a heartless deck to read with. (Of course, go with it if you want to, but if you're really set on Fortuna, definitely take that before the Unknown). It might be good to look at Amazon or mass-produced deck sites like Llewellyn instead of Etsy and indie sites if you want cheaper decks. I don't have any examples of decks off the top of my head, but I'll look for some, and searching the Aeclectic archives by theme might help. I find goddess and women-focused decks often remove men entirely, so that might help with the Lovers thing, or since you seem to be focusing on animals you can search by that category too. You can also google around for theme decks.
I'm curious though, does your friend really like gothic things? None of the decks you've shown here are very gothic except maybe slightly the Fortuna. Would darker decks (even without gore) be too much? And also, is gore okay on certain bloody cards that tend to always have it, like the Three and Ten of Swords?

Thank you both! Llewellyn looks like a great resource!
As for Gothic - she's not a goth-goth but she's fairly close. Partly that's the lesbian angle - I'm trying to only select decks with the certain type of lover card above, but there's not many I've found that fit that criteria. Right now I'm at animal skeletons bc that's fairly gender neutral.
EDIT: yeah she'd probably be quite up for darker decks. And like ... some gore I expect? But I saw one deck with a card where some dude was literally having his eyes plucked out and I think that might be a little too far? That said, I also saw one (it didn't have the right lovers card so it's not on the list) with a card with just like ... an anatomical heart? You know, ventricles, some blood etc. And I think she'd be quite comfortable with that. I'm kinda struggling to balance the two elements in some ways. I can find some very ... flower crowns and glowy-lights decks that have all women, and some darker decks with nice art, but I've yet to find anything that combines the two.
That said, I'm poking and prodding my budget and might be able to make the Os Fortuna happen. I've found a secondary seller that doesn't charge $50 for international shipping and that's making quite a difference. Still happy for recommendations though in case I can't make the maths play nicely - and the information about what they're like to use is really helpful!

wildrosespeonies: Wow. I just discovered a tarot maker on kickstarter who blantantly stole another tarot maker's art. (The art is the art back of Sinking Wasteland.) I have let SW creator know. But wow! Can't believe that.

wildrosespeonies: The artist contacted the KS tarot card maker and they replaced the image, but I'm pretty sure the new image is stolen too. It looks familiar, but I don't recognize where the image come from.

wildrosespeonies: TeaAndTarot. Probably the Tarot Deck Discussion would be the best place, as you are just studying one specific deck. But make sure to check the whole thread as there might already be a Wooden Tarot thread already.
